Insurance and payment

Insurance FAQs

Coverage depends on your individual plan. The office can help verify benefits before your first visit, so you have a clearer idea of what your plan may cover.

What insurance plans do you accept?

Plans that often include acupuncture benefits include NYSHIP, United Healthcare, Oxford, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, Magnacare, and Aetna. Not every plan includes acupuncture coverage, so the office verifies your benefits before care begins.

How do I check whether my acupuncture benefits are covered?

Call the office at 631-403-0504 or use the contact form. Include your name, phone number, insurance provider, and member ID if available. The contact form does not upload documents, so do not send photos of your card through the form unless the office instructs you to use another secure method.

What insurance plans or case types do you not accept?

Messina Acupuncture PC does not currently accept Worker’s Compensation, No-Fault, Medicaid, or New York State disability.

Does Medicare cover acupuncture?

Medicare coverage is limited. Medicare covers acupuncture only for chronic low back pain, up to 12 visits in 90 days, with up to 8 additional visits if improvement is shown, for a maximum of 20 visits in a 12-month period.

Medicare rules do not mean every acupuncture office can bill Medicare directly. Call the office and the team can explain what applies to your situation.

Do you take out-of-network benefits?

Coverage varies by plan. If you have out-of-network acupuncture benefits, the office can help you understand the next step. Call with your insurance details before booking.

Can I use HSA or FSA funds?

Many patients use HSA or FSA funds for eligible healthcare expenses, but plan rules vary. Check with your HSA or FSA administrator to confirm what your account allows.

Your first visit

First Visit FAQs

The first appointment is built to understand your pain pattern, movement limitations, health history, and goals before treatment begins.

How long is the first visit?

The first visit is typically 75 minutes. It includes intake, review of your health history, assessment, and treatment.

What happens during the first appointment?

Your practitioner reviews your symptoms, prior care, goals, and health history. For pain and movement concerns, the visit may include range-of-motion testing, palpation, posture or gait review, orthopedic screening, and a treatment plan based on how the symptoms behave.

Do I need a referral?

New York does not require a physician referral for you to see a licensed acupuncturist. Some insurance plans may request one for coverage, so the office can check your benefits before your first visit.

What should I wear?

Wear loose, comfortable clothing if possible. For neck, shoulder, back, hip, or knee concerns, choose clothing that allows the practitioner to examine and treat the area comfortably.

Should I bring imaging or medical records?

If you have relevant imaging reports, surgical history, medication lists, or prior diagnoses, bring them or mention them during intake. You do not need imaging to start care unless your medical provider has already ordered it.

How soon can I return to normal activity after treatment?

Most patients return to normal daily activity the same day. If you feel deeply relaxed or mildly sore after treatment, take it easier, hydrate, and avoid pushing a hard workout immediately after your first session.

Treatment and safety

Acupuncture, Dry Needling, Acupressure, and Medical Massage FAQs

Treatment is chosen based on the condition, the tissue involved, your comfort level, and how your body responds.

Does acupuncture hurt?

Most patients do not describe acupuncture as painful. The needles are very thin. You may feel a brief pinch, dull ache, warmth, heaviness, or a soft spreading sensation when the needle settles.

Are acupuncture needles sterile?

Yes. Acupuncture needles are single-use, sterile, and disposed of after treatment in a regulated sharps container.

Is acupuncture safe?

Acupuncture is generally considered safe when performed by a properly trained and licensed professional using sterile, single-use needles. In New York, the practice of acupuncture and the use of the licensed acupuncturist title require state licensure.

What is the difference between acupuncture and dry needling?

Both use thin needles, but the clinical reasoning is different. Acupuncture uses Chinese medicine point theory and systemic patterning. Dry needling uses orthopedic anatomy, trigger points, motor points, and muscle release. At Messina Acupuncture PC, the technique is chosen based on your condition and response.

What if I am afraid of needles?

Tell the team before treatment starts. The plan can be kept gentle, and some patients begin with acupressure before trying acupuncture.

Do you offer medical massage?

Yes. Messina Acupuncture PC offers medical massage for targeted soft-tissue work, muscle tension, pain relief, recovery, and mobility limitations.

Conditions and results

Condition FAQs

Messina Acupuncture PC focuses on orthopedic, musculoskeletal, headache, jaw, nerve, joint, and stress-pattern conditions.

What conditions do you commonly treat?
How many visits will I need?

It depends on the condition, how long it has been present, and how your body responds. Acute flareups may require fewer visits. Chronic or recurring pain patterns usually need a longer plan. Your practitioner will give you a realistic estimate after assessment.

Will I feel better after one visit?

Many patients feel a measurable change after the first visit, such as less pain, easier motion, or reduced muscle guarding. Durable improvement usually takes a plan, especially when symptoms have been present for months or years.

Can acupuncture help if I am already seeing a physical therapist, orthopedist, or chiropractor?

Yes. Acupuncture can often be used alongside physical therapy, orthopedic care, chiropractic care, massage therapy, or primary care. It does not have to replace the rest of your care plan.

Can acupuncture replace medication?

Do not stop medication unless your prescribing clinician tells you to. Acupuncture may support pain relief, movement, stress regulation, or recovery, but medication decisions belong with your medical provider.

What if acupuncture is not the right fit?

Good care includes knowing when another provider type is the better next step. If your presentation suggests physical therapy, orthopedics, neurology, pain medicine, urgent care, or emergency care should come first, the team will be direct with you.
