The Messina Difference
Orthopedic Acupuncture, Not Generic Wellness
Most acupuncture practices are generalists. Messina Acupuncture PC is built around a more focused idea: musculoskeletal pain responds best when the practitioner understands anatomy at the level of movement, tissue, joint, nerve, and trigger-point patterns.
Every treatment plan begins with a full orthopedic-style assessment: range-of-motion testing, palpation, posture and gait review, and a conversation about what the pain is keeping you from doing. Then we build a course of care around the physical pattern, not a standard points protocol pulled from a textbook.
Pain relief should never feel rushed or generic. It should feel like someone finally listened.

What a Visit to Messina Acupuncture Looks Like
Your first visit is 75 minutes. We sit down, review your health history, and walk through what brought you in. Then comes the orthopedic exam. We want to see how your body actually moves, not just what hurts.
Follow-up visits are usually 45 to 60 minutes. We check progress, refine the needle technique based on your response, and adjust the plan as the pain pattern changes.
The treatment room is quiet. Needles are single-use, sterile, and thinner than a strand of hair. Most patients feel a brief dull ache, warmth, or heaviness as the needle settles, then rest while the body softens and the nervous system resets.
You leave with a care plan, self-care tools when helpful, and often measurably less pain than when you walked in.

Exam

Questions Patients Ask Before Booking
These answers help new patients understand what to expect before their first visit.
Does acupuncture hurt?
For most people, no. The needles used are very thin, much thinner than a hypodermic needle. Most patients describe a brief dull ache, warmth, or heaviness as the needle settles, followed by a quiet rest period.
How many visits will I need?
It depends on the condition. Acute pain often improves in fewer visits, while chronic pain usually needs a longer plan. Daniel will give you an honest estimate at your first appointment, and if acupuncture is not the right tool for your condition, the team will tell you.
Is acupuncture covered by insurance?
Often, yes. NYSHIP, United Healthcare, Oxford, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, Magnacare, and Aetna commonly include acupuncture benefits, but plan details vary. Call 631-403-0504 and the team can verify coverage before your first visit.
What is the difference between acupuncture and dry needling?
Both use very thin needles, but the approach differs. Acupuncture works from Chinese medicine point theory and systemic patterns. Dry needling works from orthopedic anatomy, trigger points, motor points, and muscle release. At Messina Acupuncture PC, the technique is chosen based on the condition.
How quickly will I feel better?
Many patients feel measurable relief before they leave the first visit, such as lower pain on a 0 to 10 scale, looser muscles, or easier range of motion. Durable relief usually takes more sessions.
Are the needles safe and sterile?
Yes. Every needle is single-use, pre-sterilized, and disposed of immediately after removal in a regulated sharps container. The team follows Clean Needle Technique protocols.
