Orthopedic-Focused Acupuncture Since 2016

Acupuncture & Orthopedic Pain Care in East Setauket, NY

Back pain. Neck pain. Headaches. TMJ. Sciatica. Joint pain. At Messina Acupuncture PC, treatment begins by understanding how your symptoms behave, what movement is limited and what you want to get back to doing.

We combine acupuncture with other focused services when appropriate, including dry needling, acupressure, electroacupuncture, medical massage and cupping. The goal is not to force every patient into the same treatment. The goal is to choose the tool that fits the clinical presentation.

Start With the Problem

Where Is Pain Getting in the Way?

The location of pain is only the beginning. We also look at what triggers it, whether it travels, what movements are limited and how symptoms affect work, sleep, exercise and everyday life.

The Messina Approach

Evaluation First. Treatment Second.

Two people can both have “neck pain” and need very different care. One may have primarily muscular guarding. Another may have headache overlap. Another may have neurological symptoms that deserve medical evaluation first.

We begin by understanding the pattern before choosing the treatment tool.

Listen

Your history, triggers, goals and daily limitations shape the starting point.

Assess

Range of motion, symptom behavior, muscle guarding, tenderness and relevant orthopedic findings may be evaluated.

Choose the Tool

Acupuncture, dry needling, acupressure, medical massage or another option may be selected according to the findings.

Reassess

Pain, movement or another useful functional measure can be checked again rather than assuming treatment helped.

Depending on the complaint, this may include movement, range of motion, tenderness, guarding and relevant orthopedic screening.

When useful, pain, range of motion or another relevant measure can be checked again.

Next Steps

Future care is based on the diagnosis, response, functional limitations and whether treatment is producing meaningful benefit.

Evidence-Informed Care

What Does Research Actually Support?

We do not need exaggerated mechanism claims to explain why acupuncture can be worth considering. The research is useful when it is presented condition by condition.

What We Do Not Promise

Pain Relief Does Not Automatically Mean Tissue Has Healed

A change in pain or movement can be meaningful, but it does not prove a tendon, ligament, disc or other injured structure has fully healed.

Acupuncture can also be used alongside physical therapy, orthopedic care, medication or another appropriate medical plan.

Safety & Scope

Good Care Includes Knowing When Acupuncture Is Not the First Step

Acupuncture is generally low risk when appropriately performed using sterile, single-use needles, but it is not a substitute for urgent medical evaluation.

Acupuncture Safety

Low Risk Does Not Mean No Risk

Minor reactions may include temporary soreness, bruising, small amounts of bleeding or lightheadedness.

Serious complications are uncommon, but improper needling can cause infection or injury to deeper structures.

Questions Patients Ask Before Their First Visit

Does acupuncture hurt?

Most patients describe acupuncture sensations as mild. A brief pinch, dull ache, heaviness, warmth or pressure may occur. Tell the practitioner if anything feels unusually sharp or uncomfortable.

How many acupuncture visits will I need?

There is no fixed number of visits that applies to everyone. Treatment planning depends on the condition, how long symptoms have been present, functional limitations and whether meaningful improvement is occurring.

Do I need a physician referral for acupuncture in New York?

No. New York licensed acupuncturists are independent healthcare providers, and a physician referral is not required to receive acupuncture.

Is acupuncture covered by insurance?

Some insurance plans include acupuncture benefits, but coverage varies. Contact Messina Acupuncture PC with your insurance information and the team can help verify available benefits.

What is the difference between acupuncture and dry needling?

Both use thin solid filament needles, but clinical reasoning differs. Dry needling often focuses on selected muscle and myofascial findings, while acupuncture may use local and distal points within orthopedic and traditional acupuncture frameworks.

Can acupuncture be combined with medical massage or other services?

Yes. Acupuncture, dry needling, acupressure, medical massage, electroacupuncture and cupping may be used within the same broader care plan when the combination is appropriate.

Is acupuncture safe?

Acupuncture is generally low risk when appropriately performed using sterile, single-use needles. Minor reactions such as temporary soreness or bruising can occur. Serious complications are uncommon but possible.

What should I expect at the first appointment?

The first visit is 75 minutes and includes health-history review, focused assessment and treatment when appropriate. Follow-up appointments are generally 45 to 60 minutes.
