JOINT PAIN
Joint Pain
Promote healing, mobility and relieve joint pain with acupuncture
What is a joint?
A joint is generally defined as the meeting point of 2 bones. Joints have many parts to them and are composed of joint capsules, ligaments, tendons, bursas, and connective tissue. These parts work together to allow for smooth movement and function of our spine, hips, knees, shoulders, and all other joints of the body.

What are common symptoms of joint pain?
Because of the many structures within the joint, there can be many different symptoms involved. More than 15 million American adults report experiencing severe joint pain related to arthritis. Common symptoms include:
- Pain and soreness
- Swelling
- Redness around the joint
- Electric and burning pain
- Numbness
- Restricted range of motion
Conditions Treated
Easing pain from a variety of joint conditions
The Messina Acupuncture team uses acupuncture, acupressure, and dry needling to treat a variety of joint related conditions, including:
Rotator Cuff Injuries
The rotator cuff is a group of muscles and tendons that surround the shoulder joint. These muscles and tendons stabilize the shoulder joint, allowing it to move with the most range of motion compared to any joint. Rotator cuff injuries can cause pain in the shoulder that worsens with use.
Frozen Shoulder
Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis) refers to severe stiffness and pain in the shoulder joint. The condition occurs in people with impaired healing conditions such as diabetes, and in people whose shoulder was immobilized due to injury or post surgery.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by a compressed nerve in the wrist, causing pain, numbness, and tingling in the hand . This condition is often present with shoulder and neck pain, sometimes related to a herniated or bulging disc.
Tennis & Golfer’s Elbow
Tennis & golfer’s elbow is a condition that causes pain on the inner side and outside of the elbow. It is usually caused by repetitive stress related to desk work or overuse from manual labor
SI Joint Dysfunction
Sacroiliac (SI) joint dysfunction is improper movement of the joints that form part of the foundation of your spine. This lack of motion can lead to pain and inflammation in the lower back and hips that can radiate down the legs, causing sciatic-like symptoms.
Sciatica
Sciatica is most often the result of a herniated disc or stenosis in the spine. It can lead to radiating pain along the sciatic nerve (a long nerve that runs down both legs from the lower back). Pregnancy may also trigger sciatica pain if your expanding belly and pelvis puts pressure on your sciatic nerve.
IT Band Syndrome
Iliotibial (IT) band syndrome is an overuse or sedentary injury of the muscle and connective tissues located on the outer part of the thigh and knee. It often occurs when the connective tissue becomes so tight that it becomes painful and inflamed. Runners, soccer and basketball players, and desk workers are especially susceptible to it.
Shin Splints
Shin splints occur when muscles, tendons, and bone tissue becomes very tight and inflamed. Shin splints usually affect runners or athletes who play high-impact sports such as soccer and basketball
Plantar Fasciitis
Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel and foot pain. It involves inflammation of a thick band of connective tissue that runs across the bottom of your heel to your toes (plantar fascia). Tight calf and foot muscles, and loose ankles from ligament laxity are a common cause of this condition
Psoas Syndrome
Psoas syndrome is a common injury to the iliopsoas muscle (the muscle that provides important support for the front of the hip joint and lower back) as a result of overuse or trauma. This condition is commonly seen in athletes like runners, dancers and high jumpers.
Bursitis
Bursitis is a painful condition that affects the small, fluid-filled sacs (a bursa) that cushion the bones, tendons and muscles near your joints. A bursa is typically located near or in joints and around tendons. Bursitis can occur in any part of your body with a bursa.
Tendonitis
Tendinitis is inflammation or irritation of a tendon (the thick fibrous cords that attach muscle to bone). This condition causes pain and tenderness in the affected tendon. It is most commonly found around your shoulders, elbows, wrists, knees and heels.
Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis, affecting millions of people worldwide. It occurs when the protective cartilage that cushions the ends of your bones wears down over time.
Muscle/Myofascial pain
Myofascial pain syndrome is a chronic pain disorder. In this condition, pressure on sensitive points in your muscles (trigger points) causes pain in the affected muscle and will often radiate to locations away from where the muscle was pressed.
Neuropathy
Neuropathy occurs when a nerve is damaged or irritated. Common causes include physical trauma, bulging/herniated discs, muscle tightness (ex. piriformis syndrome),or infections. Obvious nerve symptoms include pain that is burning and/or electrical, numbness, and weakness in the affected area.
