Relieving back, neck and head pain with traditional and modern acupuncture and acupressure techniques
Chronic pain in your back and neck can make even the simplest tasks seem impossible. Finding a comfortable position to sit, stand or lay down can lead to a lot of frustration. Daniel Messina is the founder of Messina Acupuncture and is dedicated to helping his communities of East Setauket, Port Jefferson and Stony Brook with chronic pain, injury and other musculoskeletal diseases or conditions.
Pain treatment for a number of back and neck conditions
We can help relieve pain symptoms associated with the following conditions and diseases:
- Neck pain
Neck pain is a condition that affects the neck, shoulders and, on occasion, the arms. Prolonged sitting, overuse, sleeping in an uncomfortable position and emotional stress can cause it.
- Lower back pain
Lower back pain is a condition that affects the lower portion of the spine and is one of the most common reasons people visit their doctor or miss days at work. It’s often caused by things like trauma, poor posture, sedentary lifestyles, overactive lifestyles and herniated disks.
Bursitis is an inflammation of the fluid-filled pads that act as joint cushions. It is commonly found in the shoulders, elbows and hips or other joints that perform frequent repetitive motion. Bursitis can also occur as the result of trauma (e.g., car accident, falling off a bike or falling from a ladder).
Tendonitis is a condition in which the tissue connecting muscle to bone becomes inflamed. It can be caused by injury or repetitive motion and is often found in the shoulders, elbows, wrists, knees and heels.
Osteoarthritis or degenerative joint disease occurs when there is a loss of padding (cartilage) in a joint, which can lead to inflammation and pain. It is the most common type of arthritis as it is typically caused by frequent and repetitive motion in the hands, knees, hips and spine.
- Myofascial Pain Syndrome
Myofascial pain syndrome is a condition in which pressure on sensitive points in the muscles cause pain in seemingly unrelated body parts. It is often caused by stimulation and sets off trigger points in your muscles. The most commonly affected muscle is the trapezius, the large triangular muscle located along the back of the neck and shoulders responsible for moving the head and shoulder blades.
Neuropathy is a term used to describe nerve problems and is commonly caused when a nerve is compressed by muscular, connective tissue, and bony structures. One of the most common forms of neuropathy caused by compression is carpal tunnel syndrome or pain from a herniated/bulging disc. An example of muscular compression would be piriformis syndrome, which creates symptoms similar to sciatica. The piriformis is a large, deep muscle in your buttocks that when it gets tight can compress the sciatic nerve, causing pain to radiate down your buttocks and leg.
Daniel Messina knows first hand about the life-changing benefits of acupuncture and acupressure. Before becoming a skilled acupuncturist, he had a life-changing experience that left him with debilitating pain until he was treated with a combination of acupuncture and acupressure. Since his personal, first-hand experience, he’s been dedicated to helping others heal through the same nonsurgical, yet extremely effective methods.
